Thwala sentenced to life imprisonment and 30 years
The sentences will run concurrently.
SECUNDA – Sibusiso Lawrence Thwala was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for murder.
He was also sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for attempted robbery, five for attempted murder, five for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and five for the possession of ammunition.
The sentences will run concurrently.
The accused was sentenced at the Delmas High Court on Tuesday, 12 May .
Thwala and two men armed with firearms asked Mr Maseko for a lift on 2 April 2013.
They pretended they were going to work in Secunda.
On the way, one suspect offered to pay R10 and told Mr Maseko to drop him off.
Mr Maseko stopped the car and one of the men pulled out a firearm and fired a shot.
Two of the men were still in the car.
They forced Mr Maseko to stop, but he refused and they fired a shot at Mr Maseko’s colleague.
He swerved the vehicle to draw the attention of other motorists, and a taxi driver who noticed the incident, alerted the police.
Mr Maseko’s colleague was declared dead on the scene by the paramedics.
Thwala tried to escape, but was arrested by members of the Secunda K9 and the Secunda Flying Squad through a description given by Mr Maseko and the taxi driver.
The other two suspects fled and have not yet been caught.
Lt Bettina Zondo, Secunda Police spokesman, thanked the community for working close with the police and commended the police who were directly involved in the case.
