EVANDER – Mr Leon Harmse, principal of Hoërskool Evander High School, said the fight between two pupils this week was a normal fight that kids are often involved in.
“The school resolved the matter between the two pupils.
“However, some parents who heard about the incident, said the school was not safe for their children.
“I can’t blame them if they think so and I think confronting the other pupil was not the correct thing to do.
“Parents should have taken my word for it that I had everything under control.
“It is unfortunate that the matter was viewed as a racial issue, because it was not to me.”
He said the school had asked the accused pupil to go for a drug test because of his behaviour.
“We thought something might have been wrong.
“His results were negative.
“I am proud of the school and it is the best school.”
The 18-year-old pupil who was accused of threatening to beat up white pupils at the Hoërskool Evander High School, has denied the allegation and said he had noticed the fight turned into a racial issue.
He said those who alleged this, are out to destroy his reputation.
In an interview with the Ridge Times, he said it all began when he had a fight with another pupil who has been teasing him for quite some time.
He reported the incident to the school management and when no action was taken, he decided to confront the pupil.
The confrontation turned into a fight on Monday, 18 May and he said that a girl took the side of the boy with who he had the fight.
“The only thing I said to the girl was I knew where she stays.
“All of a sudden I was told it was a threat,” said the pupil.
The girl apparently phoned her parents and told them she was not safe and was threatened to be killed and raped.
On the same day, the pupil said he was sent home and his parents were told to take him for a drug test.
“I did not like that because they took a rumour serious and it affected me.
“My parents took me to the doctor for tests and the results were negative.
“I am not using drugs.
“I was on my way to school the following day when I saw a mob of white people, young and old, pointing fingers at me.
“They later confronted me and said I was making the school unsafe for the children.
“Parents were carrying various items to hit me with.
“It was chaotic and then the police suddenly arrived.
“One of the parents was beating me with a scooter helmet.
“The police treated me as though I was a criminal,” said the pupil.
