SECUNDA – Employees of the Govan Mbeki Municipality wore traditional clothes in celebration of Africa Day on Friday, 29 May 2015.
Africa Day is celebrated to commemorate the formation of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963 which later became the African Union in 2002.
It is a day that embraces African unity in diversity.
The day is observed as a public holiday in only five African countries, namely Ghana, Mali, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
However, celebrations were held in many of the continent’s nations as well as by Africans in the diaspora under the theme: “We are Africa – Opening the doors of learning and culture from Cape to Cairo”.
Mr Bheki Khubeka, senior manager, said this was a way of sending a strong message that municipal employees are condemning the xenophobic attacks that took place in parts of the country recently.
