eMBALEHLE – You Decide, Future Leaders surprised Ntatheng Tsotetsi (16) with a cheque of R10 000 recently.
Ntatheng is a pupil of Sizwakele Secondary School and was one of the 2014 You Decide, Future Leaders’ contestants.
She recently established a media center at the school.
The aim with the center is to help her schoolmates to access the internet and improve their computer skills.
Mr Sam Moemesi, principal, commended her and called her a shining star.
He said Ntatheng is the pride of school, agent of change and an inspiration to other pupils.
“All of you can be like Nthateng and all of you have potential.
“Do not underestimate yourselves, you are good enough to also bring positive change in our school.
“We thank the Future Leaders for their programme which is a big help to our children.”
Ntatheng was overwhelmed when her name was called to receive the cheque.
She thanked the school, her parents, friends and the You Decide, Future Leaders for believing in her.
She also announced that she is busy to work in starting a school newspaper.
She invited all interested pupils to join her.
Future Leaders is the extension of You Decide, an initiative to help curb underage drinking in South Africa, facilitated through a partnership between the South African Breweries (SAB), the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), provincial departments of Education in Kwa-Zulu Natal, Mpumalanga, Free State, Eastern Cape, Limpopo and local youth marketing agency HDI.
You Decide raises awareness of the dangers and consequences of underage drinking through targeted interventions aimed at the youth and the broader communities they live in, including parents, teachers and tavern owners.
The programme has reached more than 500 000 pupils across the country since its launch in 2012.
Future Leaders aims at identifying and developing young leaders while creating awareness around critical social and economic issues, such as the problem of underage drinking.
The show is based on specific community projects that each of the five contestants selected and set out to implement.
By providing a more constructive recreational environment through these projects, they believe teenagers’ choices to consume alcohol and engage in irresponsible behaviour will be affected.
