eMBALENHLE – Three boys were allegedly beaten by the police with wires and a hose pipe for apparently skipping school.
The incident happened after the mother reported that her two children no longer attend school. She requested the police to punish them.
When the two police officers arrived at the house, they approached the boys and apparently ordered a third boy, who was riding his bicycle nearby, to join them.
When the boy refused, one of the police officers apparently pointed a firearm at him after which the boy obliged.
It is said that they ordered the boys to do push-ups, poured water on them and then started to beat them with a wire and hose pipe.
A shocked eye witness told the newspaper that he saw a group of people and when he walked closer to investigate, he witnessed the horrible scene.
Some of the crowd apparently convinced the police to stop beating the boys, and the mother of two of the boys took them away.
The third boy was left behind crying when a resident phoned his mother, who was at work in Evander.
She was horrified to hear what had happened. “I know my child is not going to school and I am not proud of it. But I should have been the one to talk to him.”
The mother says he dropped out of school to care for his sick grandmother while she was busy earning a living by selling vegetables next to the road.
“People shouldn’t judge before they know the full story. I am thankful to the people who stopped the police. They could have killed my child.”
Other eye witnesses claim that one of the police officers are known for beating young people.
When two of the eye witnesses joined the mother at the police station to open a case, they were told that the Station Commander was not available to assist them.
The police officer who assisted them apparently did not open a docket but provided them with the Station Commander’s contact details.
The police spokesperson, Captain Magonseni Nkosi confirmed that the mother of the two boys requested the police officers “to rescue her boys” because they are not attending school and are apparently using drugs. “The police officers did indeed rescue the boys and the mother is satisfied,” Capt Nkosi said.
The third child’s case is still being investigated.
