Mandela Day project continues in Platrand
Mandela Day project in Platrand continues.
The community of Platrand and local farmers gathered at Qondulwazi Secondary School to paint the school’s hall on 18 July.
It is used as a community hall for gatherings, church events, school functions and elections.
The project, due to its nature, is expected to be completed in the second week in August.
The Youth For Action Foundation, together with the chairman of the School Governing Body, took it upon themselves to approach six farming families to support with paint and other materials needed for renovations.
The painting took place on Mandela Day, which is commemorated internationally in the spirit of community building.
Among other participants were the ward councillor, Ms Ntombizifikile Sitshoni, who also took part in some of the activities.
The foundation thanked the Du Plessis and Kleyhans families specifically for coordinating with all the other farmers.
“We need to involve the farmers in the governance of our schools as they have donated these facilities, which must be kept in good condition,” Mr Mali Mkwanazi, a member of the coordinating committee, said.
Mr May Maseko was appointed to head the Trust Property Committee of the area which will ensure that all school facilities are taken care of and those who cause damage are brought to book and appear before the committee.
The committee is still to invite farmers to become its advisors and be part of it.
The foundation members support the establishment of the committee and the involvement of the farmers.
They also visit schools and the community campaigning to keep schools clean and without vandalism of property.
Ms Sulia Kleynhans, a local farmer, said there is a need for a mindset change.
The foundation continues to visit pupils, teaching them about taking responsibility and ownership of their resources.
They thanked the community of Platrand, young and old, as well as the one teacher, Ms Ntombifuthi Masuku, who took part in the project.
Mr Thabo Mosia, principal, who donated paint, also thanked everyone who made contributions.
The foundation called on the community to visit the school to clean from time to time and also to conduct assembly prayers.
