Man killed for a crate of empty bottles

Two men in their 20s killed in separate incidents in eMbalenhle.

eMBALENHLE – Accused of stealing crates with empty bottles, Mr Phumlani Khumalo was beaten and left to die in the street on Sunday, 20 September.

The 20-year-old was accused with two friends in Extension 25 of theft.

According to the police, Mr Khumalo was seen by unknown women who called his brother after the beating.

His brother summoned an ambulance and Mr Khumalo was declared dead.

Three suspects were arrested on the same day and are expected to appear in the Evander Magistrate’s Court soon.

* In a separate incident, a man believed to be in his mid 20s was hacked with a weed eater in Extension 15 on 27 September. The police said the victim was visiting the area and went to buy beer when he was attacked.

“He tried to run for help into the next coal yard where people were having a party, but his attackers did not give up.

“They followed him and hacked him several times with the weed eater.

“He tried to walk away, but collapsed in the street where he was declared dead,” said Capt Magonseni Nkosi.
