SECUNDA – The Osizweni Education and Development Centre held its annual general meeting on Tuesday, 15 September at the Secunda Sasol Club.

Mr Nzama Baloyi, new board chairman of the centre, said he and his team are ready to achieve many more successes as they continue to raise the standard of delivery.

He said he is very proud that Osizweni Education and Development Centre delivered above and beyond its mandate during this past financial year.

“I am confident that together as a solid team, we will be able to refocus our efforts and work towards more tangible mathematics and science results in the financial year 2016.

“I also would like to congratulate the Osizweni team for their involvement and key roles played in a very successful 2015 Sasol Techno X career exhibition.

“It was the first year that Techno X was hosted in Mpumalanga in combination with National Science Week, and it attracted more than 22 000 pupils and teachers.

“The mandate of Osizweni is to make a difference in the lives of our local young community members through various educational programmes and interventions.

“For many pupils and teachers we are the place where help is found as our name suggests.”

Mr Velaphi Gumbi, Osizweni Education and Development Centre general manager, said he is blessed for being the manager of such a progressive institution.

He said Osizweni Education and Development Centre has a long standing history of serving the school going communities of the Gert Sibande region in mathematics and science support.

“We will continue to work tirelessly with Sasol, the industry and the Departments of Basic Education and Science and Technology to improve the results of pupils through educator training, community volunteerism in the professional space and classroom interventions.

Ms Angela Stratford, marketing and practitioner of Osizweni Education and Development Centre, said the centre has evolved to become the province’s premier mathematics and science centre of excellence.

“Osizweni has adopted a multi-pronged approach that targets teachers, pupils, university students, early childhood development phase pupils, and the general public.

“Pupils’ interventions remain our primary focus.

“Through the use of stimulant aides such as computer programmes and our model science labs, we are able to host school groups and develop in pupils a practical understanding of science in action.

“To this end, we also use mobile laboratories, which are equipped with state-of-the art science apparatus to travel to schools to conduct science shows and prescribed experiments.

“Project A, targeting pupils from Grade 10 to 12, supports top pupils with mathematics and science support through workshops, industry visits and science camps.

“The Grade 8-12 pupils are assisted with homework support through the aftercare programme, while our early childhood development programme uses an educational toy library facility to tutor parents and caregivers on the use of educational toys to maximise learning experiences.”

She said the centre aims to improve in the next coming financial year.
