Accounting teachers recognised
The Department of Education announced that in 2016, pupils would not be able to select accounting as a subject without taking pure mathematics as well.
SECUNDA – Mr Makinya Seema from Kiriyatswane Secondary School and Michael Hwami from KI Twala Secondary School were awarded for attendance above 75 per cent throughout the year.
This event took place during the Osizweni Education and Development Centre’s Sasol and KPMG Teachers’ Recognition Ceremony on Wednesday, 28 October.
Mr Micheal Hwami, teacher from K I Thwala was awarded an IPad for his performance during the assessment held throughout the year.
The event was attended by the Gert Sibande District Department of Basic Education that was represented by Mr Peter Magagula, district director, and Ms Dumsile Vilakazi, deputy chief education specialist, by school principals, teachers that were part of the programme, as well as various Osizweni and KPMG representatives.
Sasol Corporate Social Responsibility’s strategy has the youth as one of the key stakeholders to benefit from initiatives that the company implements in collaboration with Osizweni to enhance and improve matric results.
This will benefit not only the communities, but also private companies that are key role players in shaping the nation’s economy.
Sasol further undertook to support business development and create business opportunities.
The initiative increases chances for the youth to gain access to business opportunities, build their entrepreneurship capacity which can result in increasing employability opportunities for young people and accelerate output of priority skills to enable employability.
Mr Velaphi Gumbi said universities are of the opinion that the quality of first year accountancy students has gone down.
“The failure rate of first year accounting students has become an issue of great concern.”
He further said the Department of Education responded to these challenges by adding a few contests in the curriculum.
“If taught correctly, South African universities will begin to receive better quality accounting students, hence the partnership with KPM.”
Ms Vilakazi said that over the past three years, slight improvements were evident, especially in regard to quality accounting results.
“Teachers were encouraged to continue to attend the Academy workshops and to use the opportunity to upskill themselves, to which Osizweni responded by committing with the support of KPMG, to assist teachers to further their qualifications in accounting.
“The Department is committed to share imperative information with the Academy in terms of analysis from the marking centres to ensure relevant topics are being addressed.”
Mr Okkie Potgieter from KPMG thanked all the relevant parties, the Department of Education, Osizweni, KPMG staff, schools and teachers for their commitment to the programme and urged them to continue in this fashion.
