Pupils frustrated with textbook sharing

Teacher said textbook sharing makes it impossible for pupils to perform well.

eMBALENHLE – Some of the pupils of Osizweni Secondary School did not receive their final school reports because of shared textbooks.

One of the pupil who returned all his textbooks said he could not receive his report because of the books he shared with another pupil.

“The textbooks are with my fellow pupil and because he did not return them, the teacher said I am not going to get my report,” said the pupil.

If it happens that the other pupil has lost the textbooks, both pupils will have to pay for them.

The pupils said it was difficult to prepare for the examination because they were sharing textbooks.

Some of the teachers who were available at school said there was nothing they could do because pupils do not return their textbooks.

They did admit that it was not easy for pupils to perform well while they share textbooks.

One teacher said it happened that a book was shared by a pupil who lives in Leslie and the other one in eMbalenhle which made it impossible for them to study together after school.

A parent said her child was sharing textbooks for English with another child.

“What will happen if my child fails English?

“That means she will have to repeat the grade because it is her first language,” said the mother.

A Grade 8 pupil said he was sharing textbooks for all the subjects.

Neither the principal not the Department of Education was available for comment.
