The Sakhile Police has raised concerns about the increase in the number of assault cases that were reported to them during the festive season.
Common assault and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm offences were on the rise in December.
According to Sgt George Dhlamini, communications officer of the Sakhile Police, alcohol abuse is a contributing factor to these offences.
Sgt Dhlamini said most people lose control after consuming alcohol excessively.
He also said they become violent and other people end up in hospital with serious injures as a result.
