eMBALENHLE – Brig Mphuthi, Secunda cluster manager, has assigned a task team to tackle murder issues in the area.
This came after the high escalation in murder cases in the area that resulted in residents thinking there is a serial killer at large.
However Brig Mphuthi said though the number of murder cases has increased in the past months, nothing indicates that a serial killer is active in the area.
“I understand the concerns of the residents, especially those of eMbalenhle.
“When I analysed the dockets, I discovered all the murders were committed by different people for different reasons.
“The police are working around the clock to arrest those involved.’’
Brig Mphuthi said another challenge in the area is illegal mining.
She said illegal miners are at the centre of most of the murders and that the police have launched various operations to track them down.
When asked about gangsterism in eMbalenhle, she said the police cannot confirm that gangsters are operating in the area, despite the spreading rumours.
“We do not work with rumours.
“If we act on rumours, we might arrest the wrong people.
“We do not arrest to investigate but investigate to arrest.”
Brig Mphuthi said because of these rumours, peoples’ perspective has been shaped into believing what is not there.
“Exaggeration has drawn too much interest and installed fear in residents.
“The Secunda Cluster Police are here to ensure the safety of residents.’’
