Grade 10 pupils from K.I. Thwala Secondary School were allegedly banned from attending science classes because they failed this subject last year.
Concerned pupils and parents told the newspaper they were told to choose other subjects because they are not good in maths and science.
The pupils said they believe their right to education has been violated and their future is at stake.
“We cannot allow anyone to gamble with our future.
“I failed science last year, but it is not the end, I can still improve.
“I have identified my weaknesses and this year I aim to improve in these subjects and better my studies.
“I do not intend to study anything without maths and science,” said a pupil.
The pupils said the maths and science classes are overcrowded and the teacher is using their bad results to reduce the number of pupils in the class.
Their parents’ attempts to negotiate with the school are in vain.
“How can they force us to quit science?
“I want to become a doctor, but how can I if I do not have maths and science?
“Teachers told us we do not have what it takes to pass science.
“We expect them to motivate and encourage us, instead we are told we are not intelligent enough to take science.
“We urge the Department of Education to intervene and help us.”
The pupils said they are determined to fight until they win this battle.
The Department of Education did not comment at time of going to press on Monday.
