Rooikoppen residents came out in their numbers to attend a community meeting at the Rooikoppen taxi rank.
The main agenda on 11 February was the crime in the area.
The Sakhile Police and the Community Policing Forum (CPF) organised the event.
The police addressed the most common criminal offences that occur in Rooikoppen.
According to Sgt George Dhlamini, communications officer of the Sakhile Police, housebreaking and theft is the leading offence.
He encouraged residents to look out for one another and report offenders to the police.
“Please stop leaving your house keys under a mat outside your house or in the toilet.
“It not safe.
“Always leave with your keys,” Sgt Dhlamini said.
He also said all family members should have copies of the house keys.
According to him, there have been many reported cases of thieves stealing from a house without breaking in after getting hold of the keys.
Sgt Dhlamini said the second most common offence in Rooikoppen is assault.
“We have received an alarming number of assault cases from this area.”
He requested the community to stop assaulting one another, saying there is always a better way of resolving conflict.
Sgt Dhlamini discouraged the community from opening cases and withdrawing them the following day.
