Sunday Selepe is the top achiever in the Gert Sibande TVET College and Standerton campus.
He is also the best overall student and the best performer in Mpumalanga.
The Standerton campus was also the best performing campus with an average subject pass rate of 91% and 584 distinctions being obtained.
Sunday Selepe completed his Office Administration Level 4 qualification with six distinctions and a total average of 89%. He received seven distinctions in Level 2 and seven distinctions in Level 3. Selepe is a partner in a financial investment company that helps struggling companies with finance.
Selepe matriculated in 2011 at Retshedisitswe Secondary School with university admission.
He was accepted at the University of the Free State in 2012 to study for a degree in education.
“I wanted to study safety management, but there was no space and I enrolled for teaching instead,” he said.
Selepe dropped out after two months due to financial problems.”It was difficult for me, the future looked very bleak,” Selepe said.
Selepe is an ambitious young man and the thought of sitting at home, doing nothing, was never an option.
He decided to enrol for Office Administration at Gert Sibande TVET College in 2013.
“It was hard for me to shift from a university environment to a college environment and to ignore the perception that TVET Colleges are not as good as universities,” he said.
He also said he had a friend who studied at college who explained the difference between the two institutions.
According to him, universities focus more on theory, whereas colleges focus more on the practical.
Selepe excelled academically and was one of the top achievers in his first year (Level 2). The college awarded him with a tablet for his achievement.
He was one of the top achievers once again in his second year (Level 3).
Selepe believes that one should not shy away from taking a chance and if you have goals, no matter how big or small, and are committed to fulfilling your goals, success is achievable.
According to him, the Standerton Campus has changed and touched his life in so many ways.
“I thank the college for helping me discover my hidden abilities and hope it continues to produce high quality graduates,” he said.
He dreams of furthering his studies and getting a business qualification.
Mr Neelan Govender, Standerton campus manager, said he is proud of Selepe and of the college employees that enabled him to excel. Mr Govender advised new students to always focus and to have basic values such as honesty, respect, love and consideration for other people and the college.
