Hawks arrest councillor for corruption

Police ask anyone who might have been a victim of corruption, to contact them.

An ANC councillor, Mr Thamsanqa Buthelezi, was arrested by the Hawks in connection with the selling of stands.

He was arrested on 19 February and an alleged accomplice, Mr Chicco Khoza, was arrested on 20 February.

Mr Khoza allegedly recruited clients for Mr Buthelezi.

eMbalenhle Police spokesman, Mr Magonseni Nkosi, confirmed the arrests on 24 February.

He said the arrests came after the police had received information from Crime Stop that people were illegally selling stands in and around eMbalenhle.

“An operation was conducted by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) and the Secunda Crime Intelligence on 19 February which led to the arrests,” said Capt Nkosi.

They appeared briefly in the Evander Magistrate’s Court on 22 February on corruption charges and their case was postponed to 17 March to allow Mr Khoza to apply for legal representation.

Both were released on a warning.

The police appealed to anyone who might have been the victim of such corruption, to contact Sgt Victor Nkoane at 082 303 9983.

Mr Thokozani Mndawe, Senior Public Participation Officer: office of the Speaker of the Govan Mbeki Municipality, said the matter was brought to the attention of the Speaker.

“The matter is treated like any other case.

“The accused is innocent until proven guilty by the court of law and we do not want to interfere with the investigation thereof,” said Mr Mndawe.

He also said the municipality will always ensure that the culprits are brought to book.
