A 16-year-old Madi Combined School pupil was found with dagga, worth R10, after it fell out of his pocket in class on 4 March.
The teachers immediately notified the Sakhile Police after the incident.
The police called the boy’s guardian upon arrival at the school and his grandmother came to the school.
According to the police, the elderly woman told them that the boy stays with her.
She said he is also causing problems at home and allegedly insults her as well.
The police called the boy’s father after she gave them his number and he also shared the same sentiments.
The father requested the police to take him to the police station and beat him.
When the boy was questioned about the illegal substance, he pointed out three other boys who he said were also involved.
All four of them were taken to the Sakhile Police Station.
The police spoke to them and discouraged them from using illegal substances.
According to Sgt George Dhlamani, communications officer of the Sakhile Police, they are concerned about the increasing cases of drugs in schools.
He said they conduct drug awareness campaigns in schools to warn pupils about the dangers of using illegal substances, but new cases are still reported.
“The problem is that dagga is easily accessible in this community and not expensive,” Sgt Dhlamini also said.
He pleaded with the Department of Education and the schools to check if there are any behavioural changes in the pupils.
According to him, some pupils do not use drugs because they want to, but are bullied into this bad habit.
