Two suspects die in holding cells
Locals intend to sue the police for the death of Mr Fanuel Dubazana.
eMBALENHLE – The death of Mr Fanuel Dubazana (25) caused quite a stir in the community and on social media.
Locals were angry and blamed his death on police negligence.
He allegedly spent more than two days in the eMbalenhle Police Station’s holding cells without receiving medical attention after he was beaten by a mob in April.
Mr Dubazana was beaten and handed over to the police by the angry mob after it was alleged that he had stolen a cell phone.
“The police dumped him in the cells without considering his injuries and sending him to a hospital,” said Mr Sbusiso Hlolweni, local activist.
“As a human rights activist and other community activists, we have resolved to send a complaint to the South African Human Rights Commission and support the family in their fight for justice.
“The family is waiting for post-mortem results before they might lay a charge against eMbalenhle Police Station.
“Meanwhile other members of the community are organising a march against the police.”
Capt Magonseni Nkosi, police spokesman, confirmed that Mr Dubazana died in their holding cells and disputed that it was due to police negligence.
He said the police took him to the Evander Hospital when they realised that his condition was deteriorating.
“He was given medication at the hospital and was not admitted.
“However during the night his condition got worse.
“He was vomiting and he eventually died. We alerted the paramedics and he was declared dead.
“We can not be blamed for this, we did our part.”
About two weeks after his death another suspect was reported to have died in the holding cells.
According to the police, Mr Motsamayi Lephoto (36) became ill on the same night that he was arrested, and later died.
