SGB keeps mum

'Issues of safety and discipline start at home, parents have all the rights to search their children bags before they go to school'

The School Governing Body (SGB) of Lindile Secondary School in Ermelo has remained mum on the stabbing incident that happened at the school recently.

The SGB has since held two meetings after the incident where they discussed the matter but did not respond to the Highvelder’s request for information on their plans to increase safety and avoid similar incidents at the school.
Sabelo Ntombela (20) stabbed and seriously injured a teacher and a fellow learner on 18 April, and was arrested two days later and charged with the stabbing.

Speaking to the newspaper, MEC for Education Ms Regina Mhaule said this was an unfortunate situation to happen at the school, but she applauded the police for their swift move in arresting the suspect.
She said SGB’s, schools, police and other stakeholders have an important role to play in the safety of learners at school.

She also called on parents to play their role and ensure that their children don’t take with them dangerous weapons or items that have nothing to do with learning.

“Issues of safety and discipline start at home, parents have all the rights to search their children bags before they go to school. Let’s not pass the buck to the teachers to deal with all the challenges,”said MEC Mhaule.
