Ward 3 residents came out in their numbers during a crime imbizo on 10 May and voiced their frustration about the high crime level in the area.
The residents told the Sakhile Police and the Community Policing Forum (CPF) that they are tired of the thieves who commit crime and get away with it.
They said some of the residents know who the thieves are, but do not want to report them.
Mr Charles Msibi of the (CPF) addressed them and said the CPF is willing to work hard in fighting crime.
He urged residents not to buy stolen goods, saying they will be arrested.
According to him, thieves will not stop stealing because there are always people willing to buy the stolen goods.
“It is everybody’s responsibility to ensure that they do not create a market for thieves to sell stolen goods,” Mr Msibi also said.
Mr Job Thanjekwayo, sector patroller of the CPF in Ward 3, raised concerns about the lack of public participation in the CPF.
According to him, many people, especially men, showed interest, but have since disappeared.
“It is difficult to do this job alone and I can not fight crime on my own, but need assistance from the community,” Mr Thanjekwayo said.
Mr Msibi assured Mr Thanjekwayo that they will always assist him if he needs help.
The community vowed that they will stand together and fight crime.
They received whistles that they can blow to alert other community members when witnessing an illegal activity or needing assistance.
