Pupils are motivated

“I had to knock on many doors to convince managers to give me a chance to prove myself and I am not good, but great.”

EVANDER – Pupils from Evander High School spent their day with different speakers from various backgrounds on Thursday, 19 May.

The school principal, Mr Jaco van Wyk, said they have decided to take the pupils out of the daily routine and bring speakers to motivate them about different spheres of life, including career guidance and entrepreneurship, that will help them to have focus in life.

The theme for the event was intentional learning, intentional living for an intentional purposeful career.

Among the speakers was the CEO of Sanduka Investments, Ms Phuti Mahanyele, who was selected by the World Economic Forum as the Global Young Leader and in 2011 Forbes magazine named her as one of the Forbes 20 youngest powerful women in Africa.

Pupils were also afforded the opportunity to be on a panel with the guest speakers.

Airports Company South Africa risk management specialist, Ms Mpho Modisane, shared how she had grown up in rural villages of Limpopo until she had her first job at the South African Airways.

“I had to knock on many doors and convince managers to give me a chance to prove myself and that I am not good, but great,” said Ms Modisane.

She also said she often used her last money to travel to look for the opportunity to be given a chance to prove herself.

Mr Bokang (BK) Enele from Shanduka’s Adopt-a-school Foundation and a youth development coach, was the programme director, while voice artist and radio presenter Puledi Thepa led the panel during questioning time and discussion.

The Youth Leadership Investment Network that wants to empower young people, was also launched at the school by Ms Koketso Mbewe and Ms Keneilwe Sekgatle, the founders.
