The white Swazi traditional dancer
Ms Armstrong is grateful that her daughter does not see colour in her friends.
LEANDRA – Yvonne Armstrong (11) is a member of the Umdzabu Cultural Group that performs Swazi traditional dance and choral music.
She has been part of the group since last September.
Her mother, Ms Bettie Armstrong, said her daughter fell in love with the group that used to practice on the street where the Armstrongs live.
“She told me that she loves the dancing and I referred her to her father who gave the go-ahead,” said Ms Armstrong who also admitted that it was difficult for her to let Yvonne perform in the township.”
Yvonne’s parents bought her the attire for the dancing and gave her their blessings.
Ms Armstrong also helped her daughter to learn Zulu and said she is grateful that her daughter does not see colour in her friends.
Nonkululeko Nkosi and Karabo Mahlangu are Yvonne’s friends and said it did not take long to teach Yvonne Swazi dancing, because she loved and had a passion for being a traditional dancer.
Yvonne’s mother said her daughter spends more time with black friends after school and even enjoys going to the soup kitchen with them.
This Grade 4 pupil from Laerskool Leandra plays netball and hockey at school.
She said she was never afraid to go to the township with her group and is looking forward to perform at Ellis Park Stadium at the end of the month.
“I do not want people to look at me because I am white, I am just like my friends Karabo and Nkululeko,” said Yvonne.
