EVANDER – Sgt Sibusiso Mbuli from Evander Police Station warned the public against the increase in housebreakings.
The police requested residents to be cautious at all times to minimise the risk of falling victims.
Sgt Mbuli said residents should always make sure doors are properly closed and locked when they are not at home.
When leaving your home for a long period, you must inform family members and neighbours in order for them to report all suspicious people and vehicles.
Ensure that tools such as axes, spades, picks and ladders that can be used in an attack, are locked away when not in use.
“Residents should vary their daily routine and should not be visible in the bedroom from the outside when they are sleeping,’ said Sgt Mbuli.
“Report all suspicious behaviour and information to the police immediately.
“Clear the area around the gates of bushes and other hiding places.
“Do not employ casual workers without a reference and keep copies of all your employees’ identity documents.”
Residents must also ensure that they have good relations with their neighbours, so that they are in a position to help and support one another.
Never hide keys in traditional places, such as in pot plants or under doormats, and keys to the safe must be kept on the person.
Sgt Mbuli said: “Do not allow strangers to handle keys or look at key numbers and change locks when keys are lost.
“Never leave windows open during the day when you are not at home.
“Report all suspicious looking people and vehicles to the police and remember to give a description of the people’s clothing and the type and colour of vehicles.”
