SECUNDA – Each Grade 9 pupil will come face to face with the decision of choosing specific subjects that they will continue to study until the end of Grade 12.

For pupils who plan to go to tertiary institutions such as universities, universities of technology, private providers and public and private FET colleges, and who know exactly what they want to study, the decision is more crucial, as the subjects chosen in high school can have an important if not fundamental, impact on his or her higher education.

Mr Johan Maritz and Ms Marita van den Bergh from the The Society for Automation, Instrumentation, Measurement and Control (SAIMC) Secunda branch shared the instrumentation and control profession in general with the Grade 9 and 11 pupils at Hoërskool Secunda on Monday, 19 September.

Pupils were made attentive of the required subjects needed for this line of work.

The various levels and careers in the instrument, control and automation career were also discussed.

“The three questions most pupils ask during our visits to schools throughout this year, are:

“What subjects do I need?

“Where do I study or do my trade for this occupation?

“How long does it take to become a technician or engineer?

“It is very disappointing when Grade 12 pupils and their parents realise that the subjects they have taken do not allow them to apply for their chosen study field.

“It can even happen when they have chosen the correct subjects, but they do not meet the minimum admission requirements.

“All instrumentation and control related mechanicians, technicians and or engineers are welcome to join or visit our branch’s events, please direct all related questions to the branch chairman, Mr Johan Maritz, at johanmaritz260@gmail.com or 082 856 3865.
