Sewage flows through school grounds

According to a staff member, the spillage had been flowing for a number of days and seriously compromised the learning environment.

Learners and staff at Lindile Secondary School regularly have to put up with the stench of sewage flowing through the school grounds in close proximity to classrooms.

The spillage emanates from an overflowing sewer outside the school property.

According to a staff member, this latest spillage has been flowing for a number of days and has seriously compromised the learning environment.

“This is not the first time. It happens regularly. Then they come and open it up and after a while it flows again,” he said.

While the Highvelder was photographing the scene, municipal workers arrived at the school and proceeded to unblock the sewer.

They, however, highlighted difficulties they themselves faced in carrying out their duties.
The workers pointed out that a suitable vehicle was not available and they had to make use of a sedan to transport their equipment.

They were also not equipped with gumboots, protective clothing or masks.

Msukaligwa Local Municipality was approached for comment on the worker’s allegations on Monday but by Friday morning, no reply had been received.
