“We hope to give back to the community and to help where we can. The community supports our restaurant and we wish to thank all our loyal customers.”
SECUNDA – Feeding the homeless, helping victims of trauma and helping families; these are the main goals of Giving Hearts, a Secunda-based charity organisation founded by Ms Alta Horn.As part of their fundraising projects, volunteers from Giving Hearts spent the evening of Thursday, 2 February at John Dorys in the Secunda Mall.
There was a clown to amuse the children and who handed out treats and played games with them.
Ms Horn explained what the aims of the organisation are: “During the winter, we try to run an informal feeding scheme for homeless people.
“We also try to help people who have suffered due to an accident for instance when a house burnt down, we want to be able to help people rebuild their lives.
“We also want to be there for families and help them with child care needs.”
In the past few moths since its foundation, Giving Hearts has helped more than 60 households.
The money raised at John Dorys will go towards their feeding scheme and will be used to buy food for underprivileged families.
Mr Gilbert Mhlanga, manager of John Dorys Restaurant, said the restaurant enjoys working with charity organisations that make a difference in the community.
“We hope to give back to the community and to help where we can.
“The community supports our restaurant and we wish to thank all our loyal customers.”
Giving Hearts already has a full year planned and invites anyone who wants to become involved and learn more about their organisation, to visit their Facebook page or to send an email to giving,hearts@outlook.com.
“We need the community’s support to be able to make a difference and no donation is ever to small,” said Ms Horn.
“Schools and businesses can also approach us with ideas and challenges, because we believe the community is strong enough to stand together and help those who might have fallen.”
The next fundraising evening is at Panarotti’s on 24 February.
The theme is country and there will be a fun-filled evening with entertainment or children at Spur on 7 March.
