Social workers’ strike continues

They have been striking since 13 March and work has come to a standstill.

Social workers and South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) officials moved their protest to the Lekwa ANC constituency building on 27 March when they heard that Ms Busi Shiba, MEC of the Department of Social Development, was in town.

Apparently Ms Shiba was in town to meet with recipients of donated equipment for small business owners.

The business owners were identified during the department’s dialogues and workshops, while some were identified during community and household profiling.

A total of seven recipients received equipment such as overlock sewing machines, vacuum cleaners, stoves and mixers.

The striking social workers and Sassa officials were hoping that Ms Shiba would address them, but their hopes were dashed.

They have been striking since 13 March and work has come to a standstill.
