DOH: If health care professional(s) be found guilty of misconduct, a disciplinary process will be followed

This came after a family complained about the poor service at the hospital

The Department of Health has responded to allegations that local families have made about the Standerton Hospital.

This came after two families expressed their dissatisfaction with regards to the service they received at the hospital, and a nurse was photographed sleeping while on duty.

As a result the families requested the department to intervene.

According to the department, their investigation processes include facts finding, identifying gaps, making determinations, redressing and taking corrective measures, including disciplinary measures.

“Therefore the processes determine how long the investigation is going to take,” the department said.

According to them, should the health care professional(s) be found guilty of misconduct, a disciplinary process will be followed.

In an article published in the Standerton Advertiser on 7 April, the Tshabalala family claimed that they bathed their late mother themselves after she was admitted to the hospital on 25 March.

The department clearly stated that it is the healthcare professionals’ responsibility to bath patients who can not do it themselves.

However, this is not the only issue that the Tshabalalas raised.

They mentioned that they were told to bring their own pillow when they asked for it and were told that there is a shortage of doctors in the facility.

According to the department, linen is available at the hospital and they are in the process of adding more to replace the old linen.

They denied that there is a shortage of doctors, saying the hospital is operating with a fair number of doctors, with seven of them and 15 sectional doctors.

The department ensured the public that they will continue to provide training according to Batho Pele principles and the patient’s rights charter and the district and provincial office will continue to give support to the hospital.
