Beware of social grants review scam

Fraudsters use an alleged cellphone number (0761129185) claiming to be SASSA officials.

SASSA is warning social grant beneficiaries to be careful and not disclose personal information to strangers who are trying to defraud them by using the social grants review process.

Some beneficiaries have received calls from fraudsters pretending to be SASSA officials, threatening and demanding ID numbers, SASSA card numbers and pin numbers and when one refuses they threaten that the social grant payment is going to be cancelled.

They are mostly targeting the elderly and people with disabilities.

An alleged cellphone number (0761129185) is reported to be used calling some beneficiaries and SASSA appeals to those called to report the matter to the police, as this is a criminal offense.

SASSA is adamant that it will not call beneficiaries about the review because they use registered postal addresses to send notification of the social grant review which are being reviewed at SASSA offices only.

Beneficiaries must not hesitate to contact the Toll free number: 0800 60 10 11 from 08:00 – 16:00 during the week day Monday – Friday.
