For the love of music – Madoda leads college choir to greatness

In the four years of the choir's existence and under his guidance the choir qualified for nationals three times and was crowned national champion this year.

Madoda Nkosi (34) discovered his love for music at a young age while attending church with his parents.

He started singing in a choir at primary school and he loved it.

But it was not till a few years later when he attended Lindile Secondary School that his teachers noticed that he had a special talent and offered him the opportunity to conduct the school choir.

It was also during this time that he was chosen to represent South Africa as a member of the National Youth Choir at the World Choir Olympics held in Germany.

Due to financial constraints, Madoda could not afford to further his studies after school and started working as an administration clerk at Seme Secondary School where he became conductor of the school choir in 2008.

In 2010, he realised another dream by establishing and conducting the Msukaligwa Choral Sound Choir.

He was then approached by the district in 2014 to form and conduct the college choir.

In the four years of the choir’s existence and under his guidance the choir qualified for nationals three times and was crowned national champion this year.

“This is a huge achievement for me and the college; it is the highest accolade presented by COSACSA (National College Sports Arts & Culture).”

Madoda now hopes that the choir will be able to participate in various other competitions and perform at different festivals.

He explained that apart from the obvious leadership skills and broad knowledge of music, a conductor must also be a good teacher and he must be able to sing all parts.

“It takes lots of love and dedication to do well and a bit of patience will also not go amiss.”

Madoda dreams of owning his own music school one day so that he can share his love of music.

“Music teaches discipline and respect in life, an element lacking in the youth today.”
