Magistrate Gugu Nhlapo of Evander Magistrate Court took her time to speak to the Ridge Times Newspaper about the importance of women empowerment.
During the interview she said women still hide behind the abuse they suffer. They hide behind make up instead of seeking help.
She encouraged them to visit the domestic violence offices which works hard to ensure women get assistance together with the help from other stakeholders such as Social Workers, South African Police Services and National Prosecuting Authority.
Magistrate Nhlapo cautioned women not to use their bodies for survival but to use their brains to empower themselves.
“Education is a tool which no one can take away from you.
“Some people may argue there are no employment opportunities available but if they are empowered, they will be able to use their talents to do something for themselves.”
She also encouraged young women who doesn’t qualify to study at the universities to consider studying through TVET colleges (previously known as FETs).
The magistrate also noted that some young people made mistakes in life but that does not mean their families should reject them.
