Highveld Ridge SPCA sterilises 78 dogs and cats over three-day campaign
The Department of Rural Development, Land and Agriculture sent their veterinarians to assist with the sterilisation operations.
The Highveld Ridge SPCA and veterinarians from Mpumalanga Veterinary Clinical Services sterilised 78 animals last week.
The SPCA identified pet owners who cannot afford private veterinary services and offered the sterilisation to them at no cost.
“We were able to do this after we received a bequest which stipulated that the bequest should be used for the sterilisation of animals. This bequest was used to purchase the clinical consumables for the sterilisation campaign,” said Ms Jenneth Geel, senior inspector.
The Department of Rural Development, Land and Agriculture sent their veterinarians to assist with the sterilisation operations.
This was the only time that the SPCA will be able to assist with free sterilisations and any further campaigns will carry costs for the owners. A total of 78 dogs and cats were sterilised during the three-day campaign.
All the animals have recovered from their operations and the SPCA animal welfare assistants will be visiting the animals in 10 days’ time to remove stitches.
The collaboration of a government department with a non profit organisation was seen as very successful.
Dr Lukhele from the Mpumulanga Veterinary Clinical Services, and Ms Geel agreed that this was the way forward.
“Should people feel that they need help to sterilise their animals, they should bring their recent three month salary slips and bank statements to the SPCA and apply for assistance.
“We use a formula for deciding who may be assisted with sterilisation,” said Ms Geel.
The SPCA has managed to sterilise a further 244 pets during the past year, bringing the total to date to 321 animals sterilised.
The SPCA is only able to assist with sterilisations and is not in a position to offer treatments of any kind. They thanked the Fortis Hotel in Evander for supplying accommodation for the doctors.
