Homeless in Evander follow a life of drug addiction
Drug addicts and the homeless are living in squalid conditions outside the unused buildings near the Evander Library.
One of the homeless people said he chose life on the street because of his drug addiction.
“I decided to move out of the house, because I used to steal things to feed my habit.
“I made my grandmother anxious and nervous with each passing day while I was smoking nyaope.”
The life of drugs has taken over these people’s lives.
“This drug has become our daily bread,” one said.
“I did not want my family to see me in such a state, that is why I moved.”
The addicts are finding it extremely difficult to kick their habit.
Life on the street has become a norm to those addicted to nyaope, because being with loved ones means exposing them to their bad habits.
They said their addiction is beyond self-help and those smoking the drug have tried to kick the habit, but have failed.
