Secunda bleeds to set prisoners free

More than a dozen locals volunteered to be held prisoner until they could rally the support of 10 donors each to bail them out.

SECUNDA – Donors gave 133 units of blood at the Arrested, Blood Requested Blood Drive held in the Secunda Mall on Saturday, 16 June.

The Teksa branch of the South African National Blood Services held this drive to alleviate the national blood shortage during World Blood Donor Month.

More than a dozen locals volunteered to be held prisoner until they could rally the support of 10 donors each to bail them out.

Although the matter of blood shortages is serious, the prisoners seemed to enjoy the challenge and everyone was in good cheer and did not mind spending their Saturday on the inside.

Donors of all ages came to give their blood.

The prisoners were Messrs Alwyn Carstens, Harry van Niekerk of AfriForum Youth, Anele Mjilo, Pitso Rathaba, SJ Swanepoel, Sifiso Buthelezi, Roelof Stander from Eish!!, Ronnie Nelson from AfriForum, Deon Dowling, Gerhard Vermaak from Spar, and Patrick Motimele, as well as Ms Mariaan Chamberlain from the DA, Ms Aranda Nel-Buitendag from the Freedom Front Plus, Ms Lourika Steenkamp and Ms Anita de Beer from Laerskool Kruinpark.

The Teksa branch did not reach their target of 150 units for the day, but Ms Dot Prinsloo, spokesman of the Teksa Blood Services, said 133 is still a big achievement.

She thanked the community for supporting this initiative, as well as the volunteer prisoners.
