Mayor of Gert Sibande District Municipality donates food parcels to families of Badplaas as part of his birthday celebrations
The families consisted of pensioners, child-headed homes and poverty-stricken homes.
The executive mayor of Gert Sibande District Municipality and the African National Congress’ regional chairman, Mr Muzi Chirwa, celebrated his birthday by donating essential food parcels to 30 needy families of Ward 17 and 19 in Manzana, Badplaas area, on Saturday, 7 July.
The families consisted of pensioners, child-headed families and poverty-stricken homes.
In line with the centenary year of Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu, Mr Chirwa highlighted that he felt there was no better way to honour these icons especially during the birthday month of Mr Mandela, than sharing the little that he has with those less fortunate.
“We all have responsibilities and although I do not get enough time to spend with my family, we decided that nothing could be more fulfilling than sharing my birthday with you,” Mr Chirwa said.

“Mr Nkosi began this culture of giving to the needy on his birthday,” said Mr Chirwa.
Local leaders and ward councillors were instrumental in the identification of the needy families in the two wards.
The event was attended by Inkosi CM Dhlamini and Ndlunkulu, his wife, of Embhuleni Traditional Council, the executive mayor of Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality, Mr Dan Nkosi, members of the District Mayoral Committee, ward councillors and local businessmen and -women.
