‘Obama’ from eMbalenhle wants to restore girls’ dignity during their monthly periods

Edward Letsimo wants to collect 2 050 sanitary towels to be donated to various schools as part of his birthday celebration.

Mr Edward Letsimo, also known as Obama, is a young communist and is aiming at donating about 2 050 sanitary towels as part of his birthday celebration on 25 July.

He began this campaign earlier this month and requested friends, family members and the community to donate sanitary towels that can be given to girls of various schools.

He added his birthday numbers and age together and got to the total of 2050.

Mr Letsimo said he first heard about a woman’s menstrual cycle when he was in Grade 6 when a classmate had her first period.

“We saw blood, but could not understand what was happening. When I grew older, I realised that this was a serious matter and that many of my classmates would miss school when they had their period.

“As the president of the RCL of Sizwakele Secondary School, many learners informed me that some girls could not come to school because they could not afford sanitary towels.

“The aim is to bring back the dignity of an African girl child.”

The campaign will be launched on 31 July and Mr Letsimo begins to distribute the sanitary towels in August.
