BETHAL – Police are concerned over the high increase in road accidents in the area.
They said more than 35 car accidents, and one fatality, were reported in July.
Const Thomas Mogadime, police spokesman, said these accidents occurred among others on the Bethal/Trichardt road, Ermelo on the N1, the R35 between Bethal and Morgenzon, the R35 between Bethal and Middleburg, the R38 between Bethal and Hendrina and the R545 between Bethal and Kriel.
He said most of the accidents happened over weekends between 6pm and 3.45am and that in cases motorists seemed not to be aware of the condition of the roads or did not follow road traffic signs.
“In some instances, motorists involved in accidents consumed alcohol before driving or they were drinking while driving.”
Const Mogadime discouraged motorists from driving while under the influence and shared the following tips to avoid accidents:
– Be sober.
– Everyone must always buckle up.
– Do not use your cell phone while driving.
– Be aware of pedestrians crossing the road and hitchhiking on the side of the road and at stop streets and intersections.
– If you are a pedestrian, observe the movement of the vehicles and the intentions of the drivers.
– Keep the headlights on.
– Drivers must take a rest at a safe place after every two hours of driving.
– Drivers should always ensure that the vehicles are roadworthy.
Const Mogadime further urged motorists to be extra cautious while driving in the rain or mist.
“Driving a vehicle under the influence of liquor is a serious offence and if one is found driving in a such state, he or she will face serious consequences.”
