Inmates from around Gert Sibande District graduate

The inmates received certificates in ABET Level 1 to 4, an adult qualification that is registered at Level 1 of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). It is comparable to Grade 9.

Inmates from correctional services around the Gert Sibande District graduated at the Ermelo Civic Centre on Friday, 27 July.

They received certificates in Abet Level 1 to 4, an adult qualification that is registered at Level 1 of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

It is comparable to Grade 9.

The qualifications brought the inmates closer to achieving their matric certificates.

The occasion was attended by families of the inmates, heads and management of the correctional services and Mr Sonnyboy Mndawe, area commissioner.

The day was filled with words of motivation and songs and various prison choirs kept the audience entertained.

Numerous stakeholders, such as the Department of Higher Education and Training, Gert Sibande College and Liberty Life, were given a platform to talk to the inmates and the theme was that life will surely begin for the incarcerated as they have armed themselves with the most powerful weapon of all, namely education.

A former Volksrust centre convict, Mr Thokozani Madonsela, gave a heartwarming talk on second chances.

“It is not the end, but the beginning of your life and this is the chance to change your life around,” Mr Madonsela said.

The ceremony ended with the inmates receiving their certificates.

Bhekumuzi Ngubeni received three certificates, including one officially declaring him an accredited facilitator.

“We congratulate you on what you have achieved today,” Mr Mndawe concluded.
