EVANDER – Prophet Machawe Ndlovu from Swaziland was denied bail in the Evander Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 25 July.
He is accused of raping a minor.
Residents refer to him as a major and he is popular for praying for people to allegedly receive money.
The victim was at church when she received a call from the prophet to meet him outside because he wanted to discuss something with her.
She went outside and found him in his vehicle. He instructed her to get in.
The prophet drove the 14-year-old girl to his house where he gave her an apple and made food for himself.
He allegedly began kissing and touching her and undressed and raped her.
She asked him to take her home. He took her to the taxi rank, gave her R100 and left her there.
When the girl arrived home, she told her mother that the prophet had raped her.
They opened a case at the Kinross Police Station.
Angry residents of Marikana Section were picketing outside the court to oppose bail and said the prophet did not deserve to live among them and should be kept in custody.
“We know that a person is not guilty until proven otherwise, but we strongly believe the child would not lie.
“We want justice to be served.
“We are happy that he was denied bail, because we felt that his release was going to cause outrage in the community.
“People are not happy with the prophet.”
Angry residents destroyed the church belonging to the prophet on 14 July.
They also vowed to support the victim’s family until the matter has been finalised.
Church members also attended the court hearing to support the prophet.
The case was postponed to 17 August.
