Rapist gets 22 years imprisonment

Adult must report to police if they know children are abused.

SECUNDA – Wilson Mphaki was sentenced in the regional court in Secunda to respectively 22 years and eight years’ imprisonment on two charges.

He was found guilty of rape and sexual assualt of a nine-year-old-girl.

The family violence, crime protection and sexual offence unit (FCS) wants to send a clear message to criminals that they will be caught if they sexually abuse children.

They also want to inform the public that adults who know about sexual abuse and do not report it, can be charged for failure to report a case.

“If a child tells an adult that he or she is sexually abused and the adult does not report it to the police or a social worker, further steps can be taken against that adult,” said Capt Lizzie Koekemoer, commander of the FCS unit.

She also urged residents to give the police the correct addresses and telephone numbers if they press charges and inform the police if their details change while the case is going on.
