eMBALENHLE – Mr DD Mabuza, Deputy President, has laid defamation charges against people who have allegedly been spreading allegations against him over the years.
Mr Mabuza opened a criminal case at the eMbalenhle Police Station on Saturday, 11 August.
Reliable sources informed the newspaper that among the accused, is a bishop who allegedly accused Mr Mabuza of being a murderer and arranging for his “girlfriend”, Ms Refilwe Mtsweni, to be his successor as the Mpumalanga Premier.
It is alleged that the bishop made the allegations at an ANC event that was held at the Kgotso Hall in Extension 12 two weeks ago.
Brig Leonard Hlathi, police provincial spokesman, confirmed that Mr Mabuza personally opened a case on Saturday, 11 August.
“A case was opened and we are investigating.
“We will collect all the statements and thereafter take them to the director of public prosecution for a decision.
“At this stage we cannot mention the implicated people.”
The newspaper contacted the bishop who confirmed that he heard that a case was opened against him.
“I have not yet received a call from the police.
“I only received a call from Mr Mathews Phosa who informed me that there are rumours that Mr Mabuza had opened a case against me.
“I do not believe in rumours.
“I am busy with exams and did not have time to follow up the matter.
“There are so many allegations and I only asked why he was appointed as the deputy president when there are so many allegations and controversy around him.
“I said if the ANC is serious about tackling corruption, people like him should not be in a leadership position until their names have been cleared.
“I further questioned why Ms Refilwe Mtsweni was appointed the premier of the province because she was never in any ANC leadership in the province, you cannot just put friends in positions.
“I cannot comment further, because I wait for the law enforcers and will respect the rule of the law.”
Mr Thami Ngwenya, Mr Mabuza’s spokesman, could not be reached at time of going to the press.
