SECUNDA – The two men who robbed the Incredible Connection store in the Secunda Mall on Sunday morning, 12 August are still at large.
They entered the store at about 10am and approached different shop assistants with questions about cell phones in the shop.
While the shop assistant was in the middle of her sales pitch, one of the suspects grabbed her hand and pulled her to the supervisor’s office.
According to Capt Bettina Zondo, spokesman for the Secunda Police, the shop assistant realised that the two men were working together and that they were armed.
“They demanded keys to unlock the cabinet where the cell phones are kept.”
Capt Zondo said three other gunmen also entered the store and ordered a shop attendant to place cell phones into a black bag.
The gunmen fled with a laptop and about 30 cell phones.
A shop steward pressed a panic button, but by that time the suspects had already fled out of the back of the store.
According to a source close to the investigation, a customer’s cell phone was also taken but was later recovered at the four-way stop near Graceland.
Warnings that a robbery was in progress at the mall spread like wildfire over Zello channels and social media.
The police rushed to the scene. Doors and gates to the mall were closed off while security services helped the police look for the culprits.
According to Capt Zondo, the estimated value of the stolen goods is about R200 000. No shots were fired and no one was injured.
“We have information that the robbers fled in a white Toyota Double Cab and a silver Toyota Corolla,” said Capt Zondo.
