Jandré Kasselman and Riaan Starbuck spread their wings
The weather a fortnight ago did not disappoint those airborne aficionados from all over the country.
Pilot Jandré Kasselman and navigator Riaan Starbuck passed their first Speed Navigation Fun Rally with flying colours on 6 October.
They received the prize for best newcomers at an event organised by the South African Power Flying Association (Sapfa) in conjunction with the Secunda Flying Club.
The organisers decided on a new format where everybody tried their hand at navigation while flying at full speed.
GPS and other navigation aids were allowed to reach the twofold objectives of flying against a pre-determined handicap speed as well as flying the shortest route which included 10 turning points.
Testing of speed management and navigation skills were the order of the day and a penalty system of missed turning points and altitude levels determined the outcome.
