11-year-old Caden Benjamin passes away
“At the last stage, morphine was given to Caden to calm him,” she said.
Caden Benjamin (11) fought an eight-year battle against Prader-Willi-syndrome, but sadly passed away in the Steve Biko
Academic Hospital in Pretoria on 15 November at 12.30pm.
Caden was admitted to hospital on 13 November and connected to machines.
The syndrome, which is a rare genetic disorder, influenced his behaviour, intellectual development and caused a constant hunger.
According to his mother, Ms Zola Benjamin, he developed severe oedema when the excess of watery fluid collected in his body tissue.
“At the last stage, morphine was administered to Caden to calm him,” she said.
His kidneys, liver and heart however, failed.
Ms Benjamin said the staff, doctors and everyone at the hospital were very helpful and provided counselling as well.
