[COMPLETE ARTICLE] Social Development warns against substance abuse

“Crime is closely linked to substance abuse.”

The Department of Social Development held an alcohol and substance abuse campaign at the Standerton Taxi Rank on 12 December.

“We want to make society aware about the prevalent dangers of substance abuse,” Ms Zenzile Makushe, programme manager of the department, said.

“Crime is closely linked to substance abuse.”

According to Ms Makushe, the rank was chosen since it is a hot-spot for all types of people to have easier access to people affected by substance abuse.

She also said their target market is mostly the youth, although they do not discriminate against other age groups.

Mr Mthokozisi Dlamini (22), who admitted to using nyaope for more than a year now, asked for help.

“I am tired of using this drug, it is destroying my life,” he said.

“I have tried quitting, but it’s hard.”

Ms Zana Khumalo of the department spoke to Mr Dlamini and offered assistance.

The police, Department of Correctional Services, Traffic Department, Community Policing Forum, #IAM, Seriti, Victim Empowerment Centre, Kasselman Security Services, Department of Health and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs were the stakeholders involved in the campaign.
