The Standerton Advertiser endeavours to keep readers up to date with courts cases that will be heard:
• Messrs Daniël le Roux (41) and Jacques Malan (55) appeared in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on 25 September last year on charges of illegally trading in rhino horns and possession of an unlicensed firearm. The case was postponed to 3 October and then to 29 October. They were both remanded on bail. Their next court appearance is scheduled for 21 January.
• Mr Jan Hendrick Niemand who rammed into a police vehicle on 13 November last year in an effort to evade arrest, appeared in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on 14 November. The charges include damage to property, pointing of a firearm, crimen injuria and defamation of character. He was remanded on bail. The case was first postponed to 13 December and then to 8 February, pending further investigation.
• The murder case of Mr Sithelo Mathenjwa (37) was struck from the roll during proceedings at the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on 29 May last year. Mr Mathenjwa was found dead on the De Kuilen Road on 25 September 2017. The case came to the attention of the human rights organisation #IAM that advocates against all social ills. The former magistrate, Mr Anton Fischer, explained that the Director of Public Prosecution will decide on the charges against the five accused and the Head State Prosecution will then again sue the accused. One of the accused, Mr Themba Mhlongo, along with two other suspects, were apprehended in connection with another murder case in Rooikoppen. They appeared in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on 2 January and the case was postponed to 10 January.
