LEANDRA – Disgruntled residents in Leandra joined forces with Zamokuhle Taxi Association, who were recently prohibited by Vukanini Taxi Association from operating in the Evander and Secunda areas.
Protesters blocked off the R50 road with rocks and burning tyres.
Several meetings were held among residents, where the decision to stand with the taxi association was made.
Protesters told the Echo that their lives are put in danger because instead of the taxi’s taking them into the Secunda area, they are forced to hike.
The protesters alleged residents have been left vulnerable to attack when they hitchhike.
They reported alleged incidents where residents have been robbed, kidnapped and raped when hitchhiking.
Adding to the protest, many motorists who use the R50 had to take alternate routes to avoid the area.
A truck driver was attacked by angry protesters who also set his truck alight.
According to Mr Alf Byleveldt from Jelani Security, who was assisting the police, the situation in the township was volatile.
In the smoke of the protest, a group of residents managed to break in and loot a nearby butchery.
Rumours flying around the township suggest that the residents made plans to torch municipal buildings if their needs were not met.
