Masked man attacks Secunda runner with acid and snatches wristwatch

Jogger sustains severe burns in his face, chest and leg

SECUNDA – A 33-year-old jogger is being treated in hospital for severe burn wounds after a balaclava-clad cyclist threw him with what appears to be acid in Secunda this morning, 23 January.

Mr Henk Nienaber told Ridge Times that he was jogging in Voortrekker Street at about 4am when he was attacked.

“A man on a mountain bike rode up to me and then suddenly I was burning all over. He grabbed my watch and fled.”

Mr Nienaber tried to wash off the acid with water from his water bottle.

He was in severe pain, but managed to make his way back to his home.

His landlord rushed him to Evander Hospital.

Mr Nienaber sustained burns to his scalp and to the right side of his body (face, chest, arm and leg).

The Secunda Police is investigating a case of assault with the intent to do grievious bodily harm.
