SECUNDA – A man, who was recently arrested in Durban for a murder that happened in Secunda in September 2018, was granted bail of R2000 on Wednesday, 30 January.
Secunda Police detectives arrested Mr Elridge van der Merwe (40) in Newlands, Durban, in connection with the stabbing of Mr Sellwyn van Wyk (50) on 23 September.
Mr Van Wyk was also from Durban and it appears that he was friends with Mr Van der Merwe.
They were allegedly squatting in the delivery area behind the Secunda Post Office while working as contract workers on the Sasol shutdown at the time.
Mr Van Wyk was stabbed during an alleged brawl. He was taken to Evander Hospital that night, but was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
Mr Van der Merwe, a father of three, brought a formal bail application in the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 30 January.
He explained to magistrate Faith Kekana that after the fight, he went back to Durban, because his mother died on 30 September.
His lawyer, Mr Zakir Rasool, said his client intends to plead not guilty, as the incident was one of self-defence.
The State did not oppose bail. The case was postponed to 6 March.
