Mediclinic Highveld staff explain the difference between viral- and bacterial infections

Viral infections include colds, flu, croup, chest colds (bronchitis) and most sore throats and usually lasts four to five days but can also last for three weeks until a person feels better.

The management team of Mediclinic Highveld wants to make people more aware of infections and ways to prevent flu with the nearing winter season.

Infections are caused by germs and they are often found on the things people touch and can be passed from others if the germs come into contact with your nose, mouth or eyes.

Viral infections include colds, flu, croup, chest colds (bronchitis) and most sore throats and usually lasts four to five days but can also last for three weeks until a person feels better.

According to Mediclinic Highveld’s press release, antibiotics do not work against viruses.

A bacterial infection is less common than viral infections and do not spread as easily from one person to another as viral infections.

A bacterial infection causes infections such as pneumonia and throat infection (sore throat with fever).

Antibiotics do work against bacteria.

Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat and lungs.

Signs and symptoms of flu include:

• Fever or feeling feverish/chills.
• Cough and/or sore throat.
• Runny or stuffy nose.
• Muscle- or body aches.
• Headaches and fatigue (very tired).
• Some people may have vomiting and diarrhoea, though this is more common in children than adults.

The first and most important step in preventing flu is to get a flu vaccination yearly.

Furthermore, everyday preventive actions like staying away from people who are sick, covering coughs and sneezes and frequent hand washing can help slow the spread of germs.

The press release further stated that people should not expect to get antibiotics for every infection.

Most of these infections are caused by viruses and antibiotics will not work.

Be patient when you or your child have cold symptoms, cough or a sore throat.

If you experience any changes such as a burning sensation when urinating or coughing up sputum with a different colour, for example, yellow or green, visit your local doctor.
